Cylinder exchange questions and Nov. AWS show at McCormick Pl.

Guys,

After they finish my back surgery I'm planning on heading out to CA. and leaving my smaller shop here as a satellite operation to cover the mid-west clientele. One thing that was just presented to me and I don't know and I'll feel like a bafoon asking this to the dealers I have yet to establish in Long Beach. All the 80cf and "K'" cylinders I own through Mittler and Air-Gas - Am I going to have problems getting them swapped or filled since they are from Chicago (I have the paperwork copied and attached to each tank) I left 50% here and the rest are ready for transit. I know a lot of you work all over the planet and this may be a no-brainier but I figured I'd ask before being taken over the proverbial coals in looking for a dealer and supplier in CA. God, I can't wait for January in that weather vs. what I have here. I'm going to throw a party once I open the doors. I know a few of you in the area. And the Jet Dragster will be project #1 I have the engine and frame ready for buildout. But I want to meet the rest of you out west. Also- Is anyone going to the AWS show in Chicago? I have an apt. on Michigan Ave. about five blocks away, plenty of room and food and booze before I pack up. I sold my house so I'm here now until the surgery is done. (Sucks I had to leave my gun collection in Joliet, but I'll save that rant) Anyone going? Let me know, I have some folks to meet up here still (Greg- I owe you big) Well, drop a note or let me know about the cylinder issue or if you can recommend a dealer in my new area with contact persons I'd appreciate it. I'm starting blind really. It's a big roll of the dice.

All the best,

Rob Fraser

Rob, According to the locator on the AirGas website there are a couple of sites in Carson, Long Beach and Lakewood CA. Don't know the mileage, but I think they are all close.

BTW, I still keep tripping over this dam anvil.... think we can do something about that?

Yes sir, I have been wracked with guilt over it, Things have finally slowed down. I'll be in the Homer Twp. area Thus/Fri. I'm free most of the week and next week if your schedule permits me bugging you.

Thanks again Greg,

Rob

Agree - my dealer asked one thing - about the high collar on the tank - I had to look - company owned tanks are smooth from screw to side. Sold tanks have an extra ring of metal - heavy - just under the ring indicates customer possible owned. I never tape my doc to the tank - I have it in plastic protector and carry it in and take it out. It has my Tig ownership on the same paperwork.

I do my trading with Sims-Orange in Santa Ana, about 20-600 minutes from Long Beach depending on time of day

They fill my bottles while I wait. I dont have to worry about swapping etc etc. And they are the cheapest gas suppliers Ive ever found.

135cf of Argon is $21 with a $3 hazmat fee for about $24. Locally here...its $39 plus the hazmat.

Very helpful, courtious, informative and if they dont know the answer.they will admit it..and then call someone who does.

And of course be sure to count me in to help you move in, set up and what not. Im close, loaded with tools and know LB fairly well.

I did not make it. My best friend picked the wrong week to die. I was packed and ready to go, then I got the call. I feel like a bone-head not knowing it was incorporated into a city. Geography was not a strong point for me and if my car did not have a GPS I'd get lost in the garage.

Cool Gunner, This way I might spring for two aluminum cylinders for the Dynasty 200DX so I can ditch the heavy steel 80's I keep in the hockey bag! No one here does on the spot refills. That's why I held off on the lightweight cylinders... You better make it to the new shop party- You helped me find it!! I'll blame you when we spin over the jet engine, you know the local cops right? I just ordered a pump, lines and injectors for the after burner. And thanks for the offer to help set up. I'll need it. I sold a *lot* of gear. Enough to buy a new lathe and CNC but I kept the Bridgeport, most of the Sunnen gear and the welders. I could not bring myself to sell the Aerowave.

I don't think that you will have trouble with moving your cylinders. I have done two interstate moves with a variety of cylinders and never had anybody even ask for paperwork. All the cylinders were 80cf or smaller.

The movers wouldn't take my acetylene cylinder even though it was empty, but the oxygen and argon cylinders were no problem after I opened the valves to demonstrate to the driver that they were all empty.

Good Luck,

Bob
