In the case of my plasma cutter, I am able to remove dross with just a hammer. Dross falls off if lightly hit.

I find that when I pick up similar pieces, I like to use my Variable Speed Grinder with a 40 or 80 Grit Sanding pad instead of a grinding wheel. The other thing I use for "smaller areas" is a Rotary tool such as the "ROTO ZIP" with 1/4" screw on sanding pads of various Grits. For really small or stubborn areas I use my trusty DREMEL and my seemingly endless array of sanding / grinding attachments !

I use a 4" knotted cup wire wheel on a grinder and follow up with a 7.5" 60 grit sandpaper flap disc. I found the 4" flap discs leave too many divots. For the tough ones I also use a gasket scraper and hammer. Steve

I bought some plasma cut pieces at a fair recently. They were cut with a Dyna torch, and they have quite a bit of dross on the backside. The cuts are small, as the pieces are about a square foot apiece. I will have to take a grinder and carefully take the dross off, sometimes having difficulty getting into the spaces. I have an air grinder I can use, too, but that jumps badly when it gets into tight places. I was thinking of using a belt sander on the back. Any easy way to get all the dross off in those small cracks?

I use a 1" wide chisel and a 3" wide brick chisel with the business end ground thus "/____", maybe just 5 to 10 degree angle. Sliding the chisel face will usually pop the slag off and the goof ups that stick harder will clean up to a sharp edge with a slight hammer pop.
