Does anyone know anything about a P&H 300 amp ac dc combo stick and tig machine 220 single phase?
Is it worth $250.00 without running gear?
Is it a good machine? Will it do tig as well as any?
Any pictures of this machine?
Thank you.

I would avoid them. P&H got out of the welding world a long time ago and those machines are basically unfixable.
I bought one from a friend in Oakland, CA, for $300. The first time I fired it up and tried to weld 1/4" aluminum, the main reactance coil detonated, splattering copper all over the inside of the machine.
Here are some machines that are good candidates. These may be too far from you, but will give you an idea of what to look for.
I would think parts are pretty much unavailable. but it is probably a pretty good deal if it works OK. P&H never catered to the home/hobby weldor, so it is probably a stout machine.
Heck, I would have given you $26.00.
Anyway, thanks for the pix and info. I have passed on the welder.

I was just as puzzled by the fact that there were no TIG machines on eBay anywhere in Texas, Arkansas, or Oklahoma.
Most of them are in Calif. or the East Coast.
Check local auction listings. A friend of mine picked up a very nice Miller 330ABP for $300 at a local auction.
One of the local machine liquidators was telling me that he routinely buys large welding machines just to sell to the scrap yards. It seems you can get 60 cents per pound for welders, so a 600 lb. TIG can get about $360 just in scrap.
Cass, I'm in Houston too. The only used machines I see are at welding dealers, and they are expensive. 25 years ago I bought a 10 year old Miller industrial 250 amp AC welder from a local dealer for $200 and got a nice old welder that's still doing its job, but any more you may as well buy new.
Cope,
It is very strange. With Houston being the fourth largest U.S. city and all of the industrial complexes here and all of the refineries and the huge manufacturing base, one would think that used welding machines for sale would abound.
I suspect that many have been bought up by employees when the company retires them or upgrades and are sitting in their garages.
I looked for a long time for my Millermatic 200 mig and a long time for a spoolgun. The only thing left (I THINK!) is a tig machine. Who knows, after I find one, I may want a plasma cutter and a laser cutter, too. High bux on the laser, though.

message news:...
They made their own welding rigs, and used to make their own rods.
They made heavy armour for WW2, nowdays mostly mining equipment. In fact, nobody made welding rigs big enough to meet their needs, which is why they were made in house. P&H makes the heaviest mining equipment in the world.
The unit in question might run on funky power because they also have their own powerhouse, I dont know if it's 50/60/400 Hz.
It's very surprising to see them floating around in public. I think that most of their sales were to places like Bucyrus Erie, Ladish, Allis Chalmers, foundries,......
Thanks. I passed on the unit due to freight costs and another opinion.
