Nickel Metal Hydride Batteries

I am trying to get back into the hobby again. My equipment is about

5 yrs. old. I have the wall plug type trickle chargers, by Futaba and 2 12 volt peak chargers, by Hobbico. Can I use them to charge the new type Nickle Metal Hydride receive packs that I need for some of my planes?

Yes. They behave much the same as Ni-Cads, when it comes to charging. They will peak charge on a peak charger, also. If using a dumb charger, just charge longer, to take into account the higher capacities.

Your standard charger will do fine if the voltage is compatible but don't use a NiCd fast charger. NiMH requires a special fast charger. Some chargers can handle both.

Really?

I have been charging my metal hydrides with a standard fast field charger for years, and never noticed any problems.

Either you've been lucky or your charger handles NiMH. The peak on NiMHs is different from a NiCd. A standard NiCD fast charger can over charge and kill your NiMHs.

Really. The delta peak on NICd is large - 50mV or more, On NiMh its small. A few mv at most.

*Some* older chipset equipped chargers cant detect that and will carry on fast charging..
