Protocall on screen name changes

OK guys, I have been around for a while. Years really. With my last news reader I had multiple screen names. One for the Mountain biking group and hiking group. One for the aircraft groups, another for the RC car and truck groups. One last one for the motorcycle group. Now I have a new machine, (a year ago actually), and a new news reader. I can only have one profile, one on-screen name. I chose Dirtnap mostly because it was vague enough to sort of fit anything. It was a nickname I earned in a series of mountain bike races, I spent lots of time in the dirt, sometimes face down, and the name has followed me for years. It is very clear to me that it is not right for most of the groups I frequent now. I am reluctant to just show up as a new poster, however I was just asked if I was old enough to....... I am actually 40 years old. So it brings me to a question, how does one swap screen names and still hold on to the little bit of credibility I may have earned?

Keep the one you have, John. No one cares and the whiners will whine no matter which name you choose.

Welcome aboard, you junior geezer!

Go with Ed on this one. Dirtnap has a story behind it, and that justifies the name by itself. If you prefer not to have to explain your handle to every green, easily offended, close-minded smart alec, then just sign your whole birth name and have a tempory "aka" clause to transition over. That should be unique enough to transfer your existing credibility.

Reputations aside, your experience will show in your advice and comments. Other experienced people will recognize that just as fast as they will recognize your nickname or handle. The rest won't give you any respect regardless of your history or credibility.

Make a signature file listing your previous aliases and use it for a year or so.

Anyone who wants to google dirtknap will find the sig and your new handle.

E.g.: "This post brought to you by the person formerly known as dirtnap, flyboy, ace, & hotrod."

I thinki it's courteous of you to ask how to preserve continuity. More power to you!

There's not an easy way to do it.

I put up a webpage that shows all my old accounts:

formatting link
I suppose you could put info to that effect in your .sig.
