Standard practice?

Hi;

I'm just about to place an order for a brushless motor, ESC and battery; since I plan on having only one battery (E-power) for this plane, I was going to mount it somewhat permanantly in the plane and just leave it and charge it there.

As long as the ESC with BEC has an on/off switch, I can just solder everything directly together, true? I would only need connectors for a means of charging?

Thanks, Dan.

Don't even need that. My planes just have a hactch, and a means of disconnecting teh battery from everything else. On landing, I approach cautiosly, put the TX where someomne (me) won't knock the throttle stick, open the hatch, disconnect the battery and heave a sigh of relief and switch off the tranny.

Charging I use a long charget lead and just plug teh planes in. Use LiPoly and you can get a couple ot ten minute flights in before needing a recharge, tho that takes an hour to do :(

That imoplies the model will last that long. Most of my motors and packs are porerrty much 'scalpel accessible' Once changed/serviced, I glue a bit of balsa back, sand, fill and recover with film.

Frankly its neater and lighter than removeable hatches and cowlings mostly.

Not a good idea. Planes, especially foam planes, make good insulators. The battery will fair much better, and it's much safer, if the battery can be removed for charging. Lots of heat builds up during both charge and discharge. Charging hot batteries will damage them, and there is the possibility of fire if the batteries get too hot.

No. The BEC on/off switch only controls power to the receiver and servos. Power is still connected to the motor, and the inner workings of the ESC. Best case, the ESC will slowly drain the battery until it's completely dead, and ruined. Worst case, the ESC could short out and send power to the motor, with unpredictable results.

Thanks - sounds like I do, then, need some way to disconnect the battery between flights.

I'd like to try the Li-Poly's, but at the power I need, I'm pretty sure I'd find them cost-prohibitive. In fact, I need quite a bit of weight as far forward as I can get it.

By the way, sorry to all if I seem to be ignoring some of your posts: my client seems to be only bringing down about every other news post or so...

Thanks, Dan.
