Insert the ref, then go to the layer manager and turn the layers off. After opening the layer manager, move down the list of layers until you find the layer you want (it will have the xref drawing name followed by the layer name) and click on the lightbulb to turn it off. R. Wink

If you have Express tools. Use the List Xref/Block Properties on the ET:Blocks toolbar. This will tell you exactley what layer the object is on without having to waste time looking for it in the layer manager.
