If you had entered "Fieldbus Origins" into a Google search you would have found

as the first item in a list that is reported to extend to some 6,240 items in length. There are other links returned that would probably answer all your questions on the matter.
Try the Emerson Process Management web university. Its free. Plus it gives a really good background on different technologies and techniques. If you get enough points there are free goodies to get.
