I just seen where Cinergy now has BPL (broadband over powerlines), and they are going too start offering it too their Ohio customers. I was wondering if anyone is familar with this technology? What are the bandwidth limitations? How will the signal get past the transformer?


Don't have first hand knowledge of the technology but it was banned in Japan because of how it interferes with Short Wave radio. It is still kind of in a trial stage but has a lot of support from the FCC. Don't live near a ham operator. Supposedly even low powered transmissions cause BPL to slow way down or to disconnect. I heard one company makes micowave BPL which eliminates these problems. Point is... you might want to wait a little which and not be the guinea pig.

im just a stupid IBEW wireman but in my mind i see a wireless connect on the secondary of the transformer. now that means u need a wireless or hardwired bypass at at every transformer, am i thinking right here? i dont see how a tcp signal can pass through the inductive field of the transformer. or did i miss an equation in apprenticship class? what do you guys see?

The signal can go right through the transformer just fine ... if it is at a low speed. Transformers do get used for higher frequencies than 60 Hz, but they are designed quite differently (ferrite or air cores).

Running BPL down the service drop is one issue, and I don't see it as that big of one, depending on local RF considerations. Just don't be near any licensed ham operator who is active on HF.

Running BPL over the inter-pole secondary lines, or even the primary lines, becomes a bigger issue. Being spread out, they will radiate (and receive) more signal. And they will be closer, or right on, conductors that can have corona problems which generate their own RF power.

Power companies have succeeded in sending signals down wires, usually for timing demand meters and such. Some are even reading meters electronically that way. But those are low bandwidth facilities. BPL is at a much higher bandwidth level, approaching the speed of DSL. But unlike DSL which is twisted, and in lead lined trunks much of the way, BPL has serious issues to deal with that will prevent it from growing in speed as effectively as other medium will. And data bandwidth will keep increasing until we have everything we want coming over it, including 1000 TV channels.

Hi, You don't transfer this HF-signal through the transformer, therefore you need a standard ethernet connection (or something like that) in every substation. It's only the last few hundred meters you use the powerlines for data communication. The power cables got high attenuation and causes disturbances for radio communication etc. However, it's a cheap way to provide internet connection in residential areas.
