what is the difference/similarity between emf and volts.

Here is a citation from Halliday and Resnick: electromotive force is the device which does work on the charge carriers maintains a potential difference between terminals. Voltage is the unit of measure for this seat. Mostly we think of EMF as a source or a means for driving current.
