Unalaska is way out there in the Aleution Islands in Alaska. There are no natural trees and lots of crab and salmon.

Department of Public Utilities is accepting applications for the position of Electrical Engineering Technician. This position is open for applications until filled.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Under supervision of the Power Plant Operator III, this position provides technical support to the Department of Public Utilities, primarily through the power generation and power distribution divisions.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: Prepares field book data and sketches for electrical system location and relocation. Prepares engineering drawings, charts, maps, specifications, legal descriptions, and cost estimates. Maps finished work for future reference. Assesses and requisitions needed materials. Operates electrical test equipment. Identifies right-of-way and easements and makes customer notifications as needed. Performs maintenance on minor electrical disconnects. Maintains one line diagram and system map.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of principles and practices as applied to electrical systems. Skilled in establishing and maintaining productive working relationships. Ability to work with the public in a courteous, efficient, and professional manner. Ability to read and interpret electrical design and construction plans and specifications. Ability to apply current standards, policies, and procedures to work projects. Ability to prepare various technical documents, such as plans, specification, and cost estimates. Ability to maintain records and to prepare reports. Knowledge of algebra, trigonometry, and mathematical tables. Basic knowledge of nomenclature and conventional symbols. Must be proficient in Windows environment (word-processing, spreadsheets, databases). Ability to install, program, and maintain protection devices for electrical utility system. Knowledge of installing, programming, and maintenance of Process Logic Controller. Proficient knowledge of Auto-CAD. Working knowledge of and ability to comply with OSHA safety regulations and all standards of safety set by City of Unalaska, State of Alaska, and Federal requirements.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Two years experience in electrical switch gear maintenance, two years of related experience in electrical power production and distribution systems are required. High voltage rating or experience or journeyman level electrician are preferred. Other combinations of education and experience that could provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed will be evaluated on an individual basis.

LICENSES AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: A valid Alaska Driver's License or the ability to obtain one is required. Occasional emergency or non-traditional work hours may be necessary. The work conditions and environment are those that are inherent to an industrial environment.
