PSU fan only connectors and possible overloading

Feeling guilty about my number of posts, which will stop soon.



My PSU has 3, fan-only molex connectors provided. The connectors are load sensing and regulate fan speed. The meagre instructions for the PSU I found on the Internet say connect a maximum of 3 fans, to the 3 molex, fan-only connectors provided by the PSU.



The PSU is a Topower TOP-500P5.



I have two, dual fan coolers that I may install in the system. 2 x 2 = 4 and that's more than the 3 fan recommendation, with another spare fan-only molex connector to go. I like the idea of the PSU load sensing and regulating fan speed.



One of the fan units is an 5¼ drive bay intake unit. 2 x 9 cm fans,



3.12watts, .26amp. (Just Cooler TT900)

The other dual fan cooler is a slot fan for my VGA card. It has 2 x 7cm fans, current .327amp to .750amp, 9 watts and a slider control on the back of the slot to adjust rpm from 2400 to 4000 rpm. (Vantec Spectrum)



Is it asking too much of the fan-only connectors to connect these 2 units do you think? And what of the slider control on the Vantec unit? Would I just set the slider to maximum and then connect this to the PSU?



I have another 80mm exhaust fan that I could connect as a replacement to one of the above units perhaps.

Anotherway to think of it is the amount of fan current equates to air throught the box and the current is limited by the PSU. dosent matter how you share things. So just hook up three and forget it. Actually 4 will run quieter, and you should get near the same airflow. It wont hurt the fans at all. Is the slot fan using bus current? if so, not good.

The PSU is only monitoring watts used. It has no idea of how good the case is at getting rid of those watts and hence has no idea of how hot components are getting. It also has no idea of the ambient temperature or what measures you have taken to cool particular components.

Far better is to control your fans using temperature monitoring.

Ideally, one in the hard disks bay, controlling fans cooling these. I have this and I can hear when very large file transfers are taking place..

Graphics cards seem less sensitive to use and more to ambient conditions and the degree of over-clocking set. Thus manual adjustment once in a while using a temperature display on the front panel is fine.

Although keeping the contents as cool and as constant in temperature is the ideal - this has to be balanced by the noise levels. Most of my fans are temperature controlled and so the machine is very quiet a lot of the time.. but when it maxes out it starts sounding like Concorde...each hard disk has 4 (small) fans..overkill I know, but I have yet to have a hard drive stop working on one of /my/ systems.
