GM door lock decoding

Hello. I have what I hope is a simple question. I want to make a key for a door lock in an 88 GM truck. I have the decoder gauge but what is the procedure to decode the lock? The lock is already removed. Do the tumblers have to be in alignment with the sidebar before decoding i.e. as if the correct key were in it? If so what is the best way to accomplish this since I don't see anyway to put pressure on the sidebar to pick them into place. Also what is the progression for the spaces unreadable with the decoder? It really isn't feasable to call a locksmith where I'm at since the nearest one is many miles away so I would greatly appreciate any assistance. Please respond on the newsgroup since my email address is not given to avoid getting tons of spam.

you must uncap the lock, and get the plug out.. must be picked, and then you hold the sidebar in..then take your reader and check the depths

progression is not more than 2.

GM door locks have all 6 wafers in them, so there should be no need to progression anything. You progression when you have only 4 from the glove lock to get the last 2.

Which decoder do you have?

The plug has to be out of the lock to decode it.

If trunk lock lock, it will have to have a hole drilled so pressure can be brought to bear on the side bar while picking it.

If door lock, cap has to come off to allow you to put pressure on the side bar while picking.

Use side cutting pliers to rip off the face cap. remove shutter, and two small springs.

Slide plug out. Press sidebar in with thumb, rake tumblers. When sidebar drops in, then you can use the decoding gage to the tops of the tumblers.

After a couple tries, you can rake and decode by eye, if you have a good eye, and good light.

Replacement face caps sold at lock wholesalers. Would you consider shipping the lock to me if you're not comfortable doing it yourself? I've done a bunch of these.

Mr Young please check your mail. I sent it to cayoung at hotmail dot com. If that isn't right please email me the correct address at: mrjbhathcock at yahoo dot com.

To everyone else who responded thanks alot you were quite helpful but since I don't have any replacement facecaps etc I think I will just let a pro do it..

right.. is that a 2 or 3... dealing with close tolerances down a VERY tiny spot... so, the other way of saying it, which he didn't is MACS of 2

I just take the face cap off the door lock if the car doesn't have a glove box as to not allow for progression of the two missing cuts 1, 2 or 5, 6.

They're like 15 cents or so to replace them. The supplier up the road sells them.

The difference between cuts is something like .015" so if you hold the side bar in while raking the wafers to allow the slots in the wafers to line up and retract the side bar into them to set the wafers for reading with the decoder you may find it difficult to do that and read the cuts because of the opposing spring pressure by the side bar return springs. I rake the wafers to retract the sidebar and then use my small vise grips to hold the side bar in the wafer slots allowing me an easier way to decode the cylinder with my decoder that I made from several flat steel keys and my trusty Framon.

Typical damn wannabe locksmith butcher. The cap can easily be removed intact and reused.

Youre makin a mistake if you use the mormon halfwit. I promise you he will tear it up. He already smashed in sombodys damn door on a lockout and admitted it right here. Read doorjam repair. I laughed my ass off. They could have gotten a neiborhood thug to kick the damn thing in for beer money. He will also probably charge you an arm and a leg for a 5 minute job. Going rate is maybe 10 or 15 bucks with the lock already removed. Beware you have been warned!!!! Hes a wannabe. Even his own locksmith buddies know hes clueless. You can easily remove the cap and do it yourself just look at how it's crimped on and uncrimp it. MACS are 2. Depths are .025 with a 1 being .248 a 2 .223 and so on.

Reuse a GM facecap? That has to be the most stupidest thing I will hear all day!

After about an hour of trying to figure out how in the hell to work the keyboard and why the mouse had no tail Ed Jasper proudly proclaimed:

Since Ive read your posts, including this one, Im very confident that the 'most stupidest' thing you hear on any given day comes from your own mouth.

BWAHAAHAAHAAHAA BWAHAAHAAHAA He busts open peoples damn doors on lockout calls.

Ive been around long enough to know hes a halfwit who busts open peoples doors on lockout calls. Still LMFAO at that one.

But then since you think the butcher boy is a fine locksmith you probably also bust down doors on lockout calls. BWAHAAHAAHAA.

My opinion is based on the fact that the Mormon halfwit BUSTS IN DOORS ON HIS LOCKOUT CALLS. I bet he doesn't get the job if thats what he was trying to do.

And not even worth that. Dont you have doors to go kick down? LMAO

I have to admit, I've never heard of reusing one, either.
