Lubricant for the job

I've had a lot of fun with PB Penetrating Blaster. It seems to lube better than WD, and it sprays in a straight stream.



When you spray WD, you get a fog pattern. Which isn't all that totally useful. PB is also great for workign on vehicles. When you need to lube a hinge or osmething. Push the button, and the straight stream goes where you want. Not fogging the whoel side of the car.



Ah, and don't tell anyone the pleasures of graphite.

If I follow your logic, is it your position that after the WD40 that was sprayed into the lock drys out, it forms a film that takes up more space than it did when it was wet?

Try this, select a wafer tmmbler form your kit. Make sure you pickout a nice brite shiny one. Make a note of the room tempriture and carefully measure the tumbler. Now spray it with WD40. Set it aside and let it dry. The next day measure the tumbler again. Also make a note of the tempriture. (Temp should be real close to the same as when you measured it the first time.) I suggest you will find it will take a lot longer than you think.

Better to use a silicone

Perhaps there more effictive lubricants than WD40 I will not deny that. But I would suggest that the risidual is the stuff that is doing the lubricating, not the stuff that has evaporated away. Any kind of spray lube is going to be diluted with a carrier solvent to allow it to bet in where it needs to be.

I also suggest that if a homeowner A were to spritz his lock with WD40 once a week, and homeowner B never did anything to there lock, all other things being equal homeowner B will suffer a lock failure long before homeowner A.

My reasoning is mechanisms that are lubricated suffer a lot less wear than mechanisms that do not get lubrication. While I do not claim that WD40 is the perfect lubrication choice, my experience shows me that it does have several benifits. First the high amount of solvent it contains will tend to flush out crud and when it dries, the remaining film is not sticky to attract other crud. I also suspect that additional applications disolve previous layers and this is why I have never found any case of gummy residue from WD40 indulgence.

I got a bank, has an EXPOSED west door with an AR latch bolt.. phone call- key wont go in lock.. it rained the 3 PREVIOUS days.. suggested they spray it with WD40 and try that.. yep..

they now spray once every 2 weeks in COLD winter. and so far they have not found anything better for the situation.

a better lube? TRI-FLOW.. has teflon in it instead of the WET graphite..

MY CHOICE THO.. FIRST is PB Blaster. and if its really bad.. brake cleaner. then once its clean, depends on INSIDE or OUTSIDE..

I recommend that you only use WD-40 and other such products in an area with adequate ventilation... I think the fumes have gone to your head...

on a lighter note, the yale padlock i mentioned in my first post here has been put on the back burner for a while... i think i bit off more than i could chew when i bought that bad boy!

i have some padlocks (cheap, unbranded) on my shed so i thought i'd have a go at one of those first.

i was so excited when i eventually picked it... my wife just thinks i'm mental!

why am i mentioning this, you may ask. the padlock is a bit rusty and i had actually picked it 3 times (the plug rotated at least an eight of a turn) before i realised that i had to pull the hasp.

the padlock works perfectly now because i lubricated it... with wd-40 :-)

reading that website i see that atlas missiles were developed in 1955 and the first atlas flight was in 1957. as wd-40 was invented in 1953, how did the inventors know that a rocket called atlas was going to be launched 4 years in the future and would have a rust/corrosion problem?

do you think i could get the inventors of wd-40 to choose my lottery numbers? i hope so... they invented a product for use on something that wouldn't have problems until 4 years in the future. sheesh.

The outbreak of the Korean war and the beginning of the cold war loosened the federal purse strings. Convair received a new contract (MX-1593) in September 1951 to begin design of a ballistic missile incorporating the design features validated by the MX-774. I wasn't defending "Key" but I think I will now.

Rocket Chemical Co. developed WD40 for the aerospace industry. Their first customer was Convair. Convair built both airplanes and rockets. The latter technically left the atmosphere and re-entered to hit their target.

Since this was part of the same effort that eventually gave us NASA, I suggest that "Key" using the term "space program" was not really off the mark to be jumping down his throat about, especially when his objection was to someone claiming WD40 was developed for the boat industry in Australia.

Just to correct a few misconceptions, YES, WD40 is an Aussie product, that's formula was sold to the USA many years ago. An old Aussie farmer discovered the formula by watching our native marsupial the 'Wombat', and how it was possible for such a large animal to burrow and slip and slide down beneath the earth so smoothly and at such a speed, yet always emerged from the dirt with it's fur so shiny and clean. After hanging around the mouths of countless Wombat burrows for many years he discovered that their POOP had magnificent lubricating properties upon being boiled up with kerosene in a '40' gallon drum. Hence the formula's name WD40, .. ( Wombat Droppings,... 40 Gallons ). Believe it or not. ! :-)

Now who is calling the kettle black? NASA was created in 58, but it was just an extension of the effort already underway. After all the Atlas rocket eventually was used by NASA to launch Mercury, but before that and under the USAF it achieved orbit on Dec. 15, 1958.

NASA had been created October, 1 1958. they hadn't even got their stationary printed before the Air Force was in space.

I think it clear that you are the one squabbling over semantics to suggest that NASA was the start of the "space program".

When did OZ switch over to the metric system? Obviously this important discovery must have occurred before the switch over as it was a 40 gallon drum. Too bad those subversive French whiners tricked so many countries into their silly metric system, as this seems to have thwarted further slick discoveries from down under.
