just wondering if the Biaxial patent had expired already, or if it got extended somehow.
it was supposed to expire in June, wasn't it?

it did- and they came out with the M-3 design
go to their web site if you want to know what this new design is
The expiration is September 2005.

Out of interest, does the 'M3' variant effectively extend the life of the Bi-axial especially with respect to existing keys?
No it does not, but replacement plugs are available to retrofit existing "original product" or "biaxial" locks to upgrade to Medeco 3 at a fraction of the cost of new cylinders.
