Don't waste your money. If you can't figure out how to bypass these things, you shouldn't be running calls.

I could make one of those in about 5 seconds from scrap

It's of more interest/use to the market at which that page was aimed, police -- who have to be able to open the thing in a raging hurry before whoever's in the room either runs or destroys evidence or shoots.

A locksmith, who isn't operating under that kind of time pressure, could improvise a solution. It might not work as quickly, but it would work... and it wouldn't tie up funds that could be invested in tools for problems which *can't* be solved other ways (or invested in stock for sale).

And that kind of thinking can make the difference between a successful business and a failing one.

If you're having to deal with lots of these, specialized tooling may be a good investment. If not, it probably isn't.

So: Yeah, it was worth a quick glance, not least because it may help me market other kinds of interview hardware. But it isn't all _that_ interesting. Your milage will vary.

me too, in fact, thought of an 'improvement' for it after dealing with one of those latches Friday.

Exactly. A tool like that would probably only be needed if someone was _in_ the area that needed to be entered and couldn't get to the door themselves. In which case, the Fire or Police Dept. would usually be the first on the scene. And they usually don't wait for a locksmith.

Interesting story....

About three years ago, on New Years Eve day, I got called out to a local motel because the lock (apparently) malfunctioned and housekeeping's key wouldn't open the door. When I got there it seemed like the lock-out button on the nightlatch had accidentally dropped, preventing the key from opening it from the outside. Trying to save then lock and door I finagled(sp?) the window open to reach in and unlock the door from the inside.

As I poked my head in the window, I noticed a guy (sort of gray looking) in his underwear, sitting on the toilet with his head in the sink. You guessed it... Dead as a door nail!

Turns out, my cousin's family knew his family (small world). He recently got out of rehab for crack and his wife was using "tough love". She told him he couldn't come home until she knew he was out of that lifestyle.

Guess he wasn't.

I've been in business since 1986. And never needed one. And personally, I don't know any locksmith who has.
