Old Diebold safe

My husband recently passed away and he had an old Diebold safe that he bought at an auction. He redid the interior to use as a gun safe. He left me the combination and I know it works because he opened it a million times to get his guns in and out when he would hunt. I don't think there is anything else in there but his guns. I have tried the combination time and time again and cannot get it to open. I have done my own research over the internet and tried several different things that were suggested, none of which worked obviously. The combination is written like this: 4 turns to L 79, 2 turns to R 29, 1 turn to left

59, turn R to stop. I know that the number it stops on is 79 because when he would have it open the dial would be on 79. Could the first and last numbers both be 79? That just seems weird to me. But can anyone help me get this thing open. I feel so stupid not being to be open it even with the combination.

Please try this: Turn the dial left(counter-clock wise) at least 4 times and stop on 79. Turn the dial right(clock wise) and go pass 29 twice stopping on 29 the third time. Turn the dial left(counter clock wise) and go pass 59 once and stop on 59 the second time. Turn the dial right(clock wise) until it stops and the lock has retracted.

curious question.. this DOES have a separate handle that must also be turned to open the door?

assuming yes.. then try this.. try turning the handle GENTLY, and see if the dial gets harder to turn. dont force anything. IF IT DOES, then the instructions you have are wrong., but hopefully are the correct numbers. let us know back..

Yes there is a handle that must be turned after the dial gets to the stop position, but I have never been able to get it to the stop spot. When I turn the handle gently, the dial gets maybe a little bit stiffer, but not much. What does this mean?

Good luck with opening the lock. You need to follow a certain procedure to get the lock to open.

  1. Turn the dial 4 complete turns to the left. If you look at the mark on top the numbers should be increasing as you turn the dial. The 4 turns are necessary to set up the disks inside the lock.

  1. Continue turning the dial left until you get to 79 and then stop. It must be exactly on 79. You can't go past or it won't open.

  2. Reverse direction, turn right, and rotate dial past 79 and stop on
29.....be careful not to go past.

  1. Reverse direction again , turn left , and rotate dial past 29 and stop on

59

  1. Reverse direction, turn right to last number (79) and stop.

  2. Turn handle to open.

Hope it works.

thought so.. if this is an OLD Diebold.. the opening in the wheel pack is in a direct line with a tail piece..

example for the OLD TYPE... combo is dialed properly, BUT, you do NOT make the 'turn to stop., but instead then turn the handle, and the safe door opens. ONCE YOU Dial the 3 numbers correctly.

the NEW style locks, the bolt on the combo lock blocks the other handle from being turned, UNTIL the combo dial is 'turned to stop'..it thru this last move, LIFTS the bolt out of the way of the door pin mechanisms..

whereas the OLD style locks, when properly dialed, 'create an opening' for the bolt work mechanism, to travel into, allowing the door to be opened..

You said DIEBOLT.. my question is is this name ON THE COMBINATION DIAL?

using your numbers.. 4 turns to L 79, 2 turns to R 29, 1 turn to left

59, turn R to stop. I 4 times left to 79,, stop turn RIGHT, stopping when 29 comes up the THIRD TIME-stop turn LEFT, stopping when 59 comes up the SECOND TIME, and STOP.. leave the combo dial alone and try turning the handle

if no success, then try this

RIGHT 4 times to 79 LEFT till 29 comes up he third time then RIGHT, stopping when 59 comes up the SECOND TIME..

try the handle..

you MUST count the turns.. the allowable flop is the first turn.. you can go MORE than 4, but not less..5 is OK, and so forth..

from 79 to 29 is NOT 3 COMPLETE TURNS.. 79 to 0, to 29, is about 1/2 turn.. then go around till 29 is up again the SECOND time..making it up at the index 3 times TOTAL. from 29 to 59 is 30 numbers, THEN around again to the 59- a total of 1.3 turns.. NOT 2..

on the dial, the index mark is at 12 oclock on the outer dial ring.. IS THERE another mark about10:30 or so, or a bit closer to 11? looks like the mark at 12 oclock but a bit smaller? or is there ANY other marks on the outer dial ring?

IF there IS a second mark to the right of the 12 oclock one, then you got a 'turn to stop' combination lock.. but if there is NOT, you probably got an older type lock, where its just the 3 numbers, and no final 'turn to stop'

I hope you don't mind, I emailed you a picture of the lock. I really appreciate your help with this. I know that I may have to eventually pay someone to come here and figure it out, but that will have to be later on, I can't afford it right now. I have one daughter in college and tuition is very high. I have tried everything that has been suggested so far and nothing has worked yet. Maybe I don't have the right numbers after all. I have even tried switching their order and so on. I just can't believe that he would write down the wrong combination and put it in the file cabinet. This is the only safe we own. Anyway, if you get a chance look at the photos of the lock and then if you can't help me, I truly appreciate everything you've suggested so far. Thanks.

Got your picture, thanks. I had one of these safes a while back. It was Left right left right. 4 3 2

  1. 4 times left do not pass number if you pass number start over. change directions to right and pass 29 TWICE stopping on the third time then change directions again to the left and pass 59 ONCE stopping on it the second time then change directions again and slowly, slowly turn dial to right and as you approach 10 then 5 then 100 see if the dial stops around 85 if not Oscillate (Wiggle) dial between 80 and 20. this sometimes allows for slippage and misdialing of the numbers. If this doesn't work the next thing that I would do is rap the safe at the drop in point with a deadblow hammer (a soft face hammer packed with BB's to transfer force inside the safe) you can try this if it's not open yet add one number to each i.e. 80 30 60 (which is probably the combo anyway) then try subtracting a number from each. Oscillate the dial around the drop in point each time. it should be around
100 Hope this helps, Roger

For someone unfamiliar with opening a safe, I can not stress enough that you turn the dial slowly and stop EXACTLY on the number. Do NOT pass the number, even a little bit. Turn the knob slowly as you approach the number and stop exactly on the number. If you are off even a little bit, the safe will not open. Also be very careful with the counting of the turns. Also, to play it safe, try turning the dial 5 or 6 times to the left , (instead of 4) before stopping on the first number. All the wheels must be stacked together before you start dialing the combination. But only count it as 4 turns. Roger Cann's procedure looks correct. Good luck.

Shiva,

I'm quite curious about this safe too. Would you email me the picture of it?

here's a picture of the lock and handle below it. I'll leave it up for a couple days on this site I maintain for a local charity group.

Good pic. Sharp, no motion blur. Either an exceptional handheld, highspeed, or some kind of stabilizer, 'pod or resting on something with an autoshoot.

its a spyproof dial Diebold.. the numbers are on teh EDGE of the dial, and not the face, has the clear plastic with red line on the top, but the rest of the dial is totally closed over --Shiva--

yeah, saved me some digging..

and now I WILL ADD, cause I had this happen to one ONCE..

your numbers CAN BE correct, BUT the outer dial shield has SLIPPED..

so instead of your numbers, redial with each number 1 lower.., then try 2 lower, then 3.. no success, go UP 1 number, then 2, then 3..

ONCE you get it open, LEAVE IT OPEN till you get someone to fix this, its a LOT LOT cheaper than going the hard way of drilling..

Got one of these in a school in pincipals office and he walked back in in time to see a 4 eyar old hanging off the dial ring.. next morning he couldnt dial it.. so told him to dial numbers off.. the kid had slipped it 2 numbers to the left.. 10 minutes disassembly and reset it to the correct point and all was well.
