Pebra Key Service

I have a seized Pebra ignition key cylinder from a 72 BMW bavaria that I'd like to have serviced. Any recommendations (other than "get another one")?

Thanks!

sure.. several..

does the key come OUT? if so, a LITTLE WD40, or TriFlow sprayed in the key way.. a LITTLE..

is the key original and worn? or a copy and/or worn..

then you need a new key cut by CODE.. NOT a copy of this one.. then spray the lock with one of the above, and see if that fixes it..

if not.. then, a determination must be made is the lock itself wore out? Not knowing old Beemers, I do NOT know if you can go back to the dealer and order an ignition lock already key to the car, and if you can, order 2 NEW keys at the same time..

IF the key will not come out, AND this is a FLOOR SHIFT AUTOMATIC transmission, get a repair manual for this, find out what you adjust in the floor consol, to tell the lock that it IS indeed in park,, this can happen suddenly-usually due to : old age, a bad tranny mount, or a bad engine mount ditto if you can get the key IN, and it not turn to on.. this AFAIK, does NOT apply to a manual transmission floor shift car UNLESS there is a 'solenoid' mechanism to prevent the key from turning unless the clutch is depressed..then you could have a bad clutch switch, or solenoid, or some wiring...

good luck

This kind of depends on what is wrong with the lock. If you are in a larger metropolitan area, it should not be all that tough to find a locksmith to take on the task. The lock is over 30 years old so it might have considerable wear and if a replacement is available that might be your best option but not necessarily. These locks were not prone to failure so the likely problem is a worn key and cleaning.

Where are you located?

This is actually a pretty difficult lock. He has a Pebra dimple key(3+4 cut key) that is angled cut. Going to be a chore to fix OR get a replacement. I can tell you that it would be difficult to find anyone that has a ILCO PE1 blank and getting a hold of some may be a challenge. Going to need some High Security equipment for sure....

This will NOT be an easy job.....

I can find the blanks and I have fit keys to these before. I have never had to disassemble one however, but it probably is doable.
