Re: Need safe(s) recommendation

My recommendations are as follows - very much along the same thinking as the other posts on this thread

Purchasing a fireproof filing cabinet that is lockable is a great first step. A 2, 3 or 4 drawer UL Class 350 fire rated filing cabinet is a great place to start. Schwab Corp. makes a mixed media file cabinet that has UL Class 350 file cabinet drawers along with UL Class 125 fire rated file cabinet drawers. You can protect paper documents as well as magnetic media such as CD's, discs, tapes, etc. With upgradable locks you can rest assured that the contents are safe. They are even backed by a $100,000 replacement warranty.

2) Alternatively you can buy a media cooler insert to protect your magnetic computer media. The device is a small box that when placed inside your fire file will protect the computer media with a UL Class 125 fire rating. Similar to a Sentry but these are UL Classified, not just tested.

This is a common myth with buying fire file cabinets. Just because it is UL tested doesn't mean it passed the test. It is of utmost importance to ensure the fire proof file cabinet or fireproof safe is classified by the Underwriters' Laboratory (UL) or other nationally known independent testing labs. Make sure you stay away from filing cabinets or fireproof safes with just a manufacturers' or non-independent ratings.

Hope that helps
