You're filing mostly brass. I doubt your $35 file is appreciably harder than my $5 one, which is what is going to effect the rate of wear.

If you can impression keys with a $5 hardware store file then more power to you. Of course you don't need the pippin, some fid it a bit more convenient than the round file but the round grobet works just fine, and half the price of the pippin.
