Patent Protection

A friend of mine has designed an engine modification that he thinks is significant. How can he have his design evaluated by experts to see if there is anything to his idea, without risk to his ownership?

He has done a patent search and found nothing like it. (Maybe there's a good reason?) He has had his drawings professionally rendered, but can't afford to follow through on the patent process. With some validation from an expert, acquiring the funds shouldn't be a problem.

Suggestions?

Thanks!

One thing I've done to protect myself is use the USPTO Document Disclosure Program. Only a letter, description and $10. It gives you some breathing room to approach investors and vendors before making it public and follow through with your patent. Also, look at the new Provisional Patent. You make your claims, but none of the background, drawings, searches or boilerplate. It's only $80 for individuals and you can say Patent Pending. I'm going to use it soon. Dan

Its the job of Patent Attorneys to advise on issues such as this. Ask around for a reputable outfit, they will advise with little or no cost at this early stage, whether they consider the idea patentable, they will also provide various cost scenarios which may be useful.
