Hi, I'm finishing my degree in Mechanical Engineering. I have one last course to do: a final project. I need to find a real world problem as a subject. It needs to be related to machine design (mechanical elements and assembly) and static & strength of material. I am particularily interested in designing steel structures or mechanism or things with gear systems and bearings. I will modelise my design in Soliworks and do FEM. Does anyone would know about some websites or books that could give ideas about real world design problems (it needs to be specific enough). Thanks JC

Where are you located?
I am not being unhelpful, jcprimeau. But the act of looking around the real world to see what can be realistically done to solve problems is a beneficial experience. Take it as a challenge, and enjoy it.
What a lot of people do at my school is approach industry and private firms and they do the base research for them
Design and build a combination machine. Combine 2 machines commonly used now into a single integrated design. I was on a team that designed and built a combination jack and wench for a SUV for a summer class. Ours wasn't that integrated. In a full term, you can do better.
