Anyone actually know how WD-40 got its name?

I picked up a $3.94 bottle of PermaBlue at Wally World on a trip through there this morning. Starting with the little parts, like the spring, bolt, trigger guard, and ejector, I gave it a whirl.

First was a cleanup with a brass brush, then a whisk with 0000 steel wool (Liberon makes some outstandingly smooth/consistent wool, BTW), then a douche with DA and a swab with PermaBlue. Hmmm, it doesn't look like it's coating. I followed the directions and didn't use any heat. I buffed, rinsed, buffed with wool again and tried a second coat. Better. I think I'll try some more coats with heat tomorrow, keeping the bottle of DA well away from the 1,000° heat gun.

If that doesn't do it, I'll try some acetone and/or Wonder Blue if I can find any locally.

Grok abandoning toluene.

And I prefer the low/no odor versions and am willing to get the crowbar out for the difference in price.

The bad news: the rust on the end of the barrel is cancerous to about

0.030 deep. Damn! It's soaking with WD-40 now and I may seek out some blasting beads for that $3 HF pint-sized sandblaster I found...

Great. I'll look for that the next time it's around me in a store.

I bought a galon of each (Cdn$20 total) and a Shure Shot sprayer (~Cdn$30, IIRC) a few years ago. On my second or third set of the gallon cans now. Sure beats ~$10 for 12oz in a spray can.

Valid point. I also use a mask with vapour filters when TIGing and plasma cutting - Ozone is bad news for asthmatics.

Most steel wool is treated with sort sort of oil or other rustpreventative. I bet the DA didn't remove the residue. I've seen some bluing instructions that tell you to wash the wool in solvent before use.

Yeah, gallons are much, much cheaper. I also recently bought the adapter hose to run my little portable BBQ from a 20 lb propane tank. The hose was $9.95, the tank $21.88, and it was $7.92 to fill it. That should last me about 8 years. LPG is $1.69/gal compared to $2 for the 14oz cans, about 9x cheaper. But I can also use it to power my torch or my single-burner camp stove if the power fails. (Gotskta have hot coffee, power or not.)

Did I ever tell you how much I appreciated your Canuckistani money? The Claudia Schiffer $20 is just superb.

Oh, you poor, sheltered lad! She's only one of the few, the beautiful, the SUPERMODELS.

So dump her and grab the older Claudia. Did you get the Canuckistani note in your email last night?

That was badly worded. I should have said, "Claudia is a little young for me."

Interesting version. I wonder if the bank would accept it?

I took advantage of it for a joke, too. Gotcha!

The mail tellers would all probably fight over it.
