I have a IH-3400A backhoe in decent condition but the power steeringhas gone out. It started failing by working intermittently and now,it is completely gone. Yes, it has fluid. Sometimes the steeringwheel will turn if you put a great about of force on it and the fronttires will turn. At other times, the steering wheel will easily turnbut not front wheel action.I do have a limited service manual for the machine showing the flowfor the steering. I was thinking of getting a 0 to 4500 p.s.i. gaugeand working down the line to see where I am not getting pressure but Idon't know what I am doing.Any ideas that don't cost an arm and a leg?ThanksJoe

I presume this is full hydraulic steering i.e. no mechanical linkage,just a pair of hydraulic cylinders or a double ended cylinder operatingthe wheel linkage? There is essentially nothing that can go wrong onthat end beyond a leaking or crushed cylinder. Attached to the steering wheel will be a hydraulic steering valve unitwith four hydraulic connections, two to the steering cylinder(s), ahydraulic pressure supply and a return to the hydraulic tank. You cancheck for hydraulic pressure at the input, but 95% chance it's fine ifthe rest of the hydraulics on the machine are fine since they arenormally all fed from the same pump. These steering valves are rather complex, but they aren't all thatexpensive, especially if they are newer. You may be able to buy arebuild kit for the steering valve for $30-$50. Northern Tool andSurplus Center both list some hydraulic steering valves for around$450-$500.

3514, built in the late 60s. I'm bettin' all Internationals for this time used the same steering unit.

hello im hopping you still have this email address i was looking to see if someone can help me with the same problem as the gu y on here but just a little different...... i drained the fluid out of all my tanks and now the power steering dont work and also the swing on the bac khoe. i have a 70's model case IH 3400A everything else works but those to w things and it was working good before i drained the oil can you please he lp me my email is ilandrio at yahoo .com
