I have been trying to dial in a 3 Jaw Chuck on its backplate. It is an
8" Buck and is not an adjust true. Anyway, I get the rod dialed in to around .0005 at the center of the 3" rod (1.5" from chuck jaws)and then check the end of the rod for concentricity away from the chuck jaws and I get an error of about .003. The drill rod is a piece of
3"x1/2" drill rod. The specs on the rod are :
Section (In.)=+ -.001 Concentricity= + -.0005 Length (In)= +1/8 / -0.00
What exactly does "Section" mean? Is this implying that the cross section of the rod is accurate to + - .001? Is the concentricity specification saying the rod is accurate to + or - .0005 over its entire 3' length?
Is what is confusing me is that if the rod is concetric and running true at one point (at 1.5" from chuck jaws) then why isn't it running true at the end of the rod? If it is running true in one location it should be true anywhere from the chuck jaws to the end of the rod. If there is a variation of .0005 over the length of the rod wouldn't this introduce an error of .001 when it was chucked and rotated possibly? I know that 3 jaws have a runout of a few thousandths of an inch due to errors or wear in the scroll. Is this acceptable to have that type of variation over the length of such a short piece of drill rod?
