sources for small 3-jaw chuck

The 3-jaw chuck on my Cowell 90-ME was discovered dead today (two teeth missing from one of the jaws, and not the end ones !). I think its a Toyo chuck on a Cowell backplate (14 x 1.5mm ?? - whatever, its the older Cowell spindle type, not the newer one which I think is the same as Unimat).

Anyone got suggestions of where to find a suitable chuck ? I think the 80mm TOS ones from Chronos are too large when one allows for the jaws sticking out, the centre height being about 44mm on the Cowell.

A Unimat chuck might do if I can remove the spindle area - anyone know a UK source of Unimat bits, and know how the chuck is constructed ? (I could either unbolt or machine away the mounting, I have access to big machines if needed).

Ideally after something made with hardened jaws (prefer to avoid aluminium jaws, etc), reasonably concentricity.

Have a look at

for a name and address. They currently have 60mm self centering 3 and 4 jaw models at £55. They have an excellent catalogue that came out free with M.E. and M.E.W. recently. Pity their web site is not finished. Despite my location I have absolutely no connection with them.

Thanks, that was fast ! 13 mins after I posted the question !

Any more information on them Dick, or just best to ring and ask for a catelogue ?

I think you'll have to ring them (0116 2695693), as Dick commented the web site isn't fully operational yet. If you could live with an 80mm instead of 60mm they are only £40.

Cowells are still trading

I understand they continue to provide spares, for both the 'new' and 'old' types of spindle.

Thanks for the replies.... after some digging around I found the following:

The TOS 80mm chucks (and clones) are way too big & heavy for a Cowell. I tracked down what I think are the ACE 60mm chucks - Chinese copy of a Polish Toolmex, without a separate backplate on 14x1mm thread.

Cowell do have spares, but only for the new 14x1mm spindle at £150+. Their chuck has a screw thread in the body (I guess its the Toolmex), so to fit the old spindle would mean machining the rear of the chuck to fit some form of bush and then a new thread. Possible with the machinery I can borrow access to, but a fair bit of work. Changing the spindle to the new 14x1 would be expensive as I have a 4-jaw, faceplate, collet holder system (x2) to modify or replace.

Cowell suggested that Proxxon were the last people to import a Toyo clone (catelogue shows Proxxon still do something like the Toyo, the 230). Chronos are Proxxon dealers, but couldn't find the 3-jaw as a single part. However, they passed me to the importers (Brimarc), and in turn to the technical department who said, yes, the Proxxon has a Toyo chuck with a

14x1mm backplate, and its £110. So, one is in the post to me. It should fit the backplate from my existing Toyo chuck. Also, if I make another backplate I can press the old one back into service with the jaws in reversed position, where they still have adequate teeth to operate.
