The other alternative is to let them steal your shiny new tape deck that you never got around to applying power to. When the perp (or the recipient of stolen goods) applies power, you can read his name in the newspaper ;)

Isn't that the truth. The courts and juries are quick to compensate when someone's political correctness is violated, but somehow our feelings of security and personal space don't have the same value.
