In one fantasy, a buddy and I worked up an antitheft system that consisted of a motion detector that triggered a recording of a VERY LARGE dog going berserk behind the door (good loudspeakers and a high-powered amp), and a motorized "door shaker" mounted inside the door so that it sounded like the dog was trying to break down the door. Figured any thief would move on to another house before trying to find out if the dog was real. Of course you couldn't have any windows that would allow someone to see inside the foyer, but it might work well in an apartment.

One more suggestion. I covered all my shop windows with limo window tint, the darkest I could find. There is no way in hell anyone can see in during the day. At night with lights on one can see in, but not nearly so well as without. Only bummer is it does kill a fair amount of light and has noticeably darkened the shop.

This is of course, a preventative measure to keep folks from seeing you have valuable stuff in the first place. In your case, there's two folks that now know otherwise.

Might be time for a shop dog...

Perhaps the vast majority of black people do not steal, but it seems that the vast majority of people who steal are black. Also, if you see a car stopped in the middle of a road with the people inside talking to people walking along the street, they are almost always black. But that doesn't mean that the majority of black people stop in the middle of the road, blocking traffic going both ways, to talk to people walking along the street. Perhaps stealing and inconsiderate behavior is the result of being discriminated against? I don't know, but it appears to be a cycle, a race is discriminated against and people of that race get revenge for being discriminated against.

When I used to work on office equipment, I went to a few different prisons in the area. I would guess that at least 85% of the inmates were black. As for myself, I try to do what I can to stop the cycle by treating everyone with respect whether I feel they deserve it or not.

Just some of my thoughts and observations.

I always wanted to put one of those PE horns, the ones that called you in to take your shower in high school, by the garage door at ear level connected to a motion sensor. Trouble is that, now-a-days, I'd get myself all'a time.

Chief, arm your home alarm system (remote?) while you're in the shop.

One of the guys on the Home Automation group mentioned a dual-lamp automatic flood fixture where he replaced one of the lamps with a screw-in 120v outlet. An extension cord went into the house and lit a bulb there when the outside light came on to notify him of the breach. (He had a fence which was often scaled by kids.) He later added an inside- switched exterior fixture and removed the bulb from the auto fixture. The interior/autobulb coming on would notify him and he could hit the lights and immediately run out, armed, to capture the perps.

I'd really like to see the stats on the medical costs of (and violence related to) neighbors' barking dogs. It has to be staggering.

People, if you're not home during the day and live within earshot of your neighbors, please don't get a damned dog. It will instantly instill thoughts of homicide (and/or dogicide) in your neighbors. DAMHIKT

The cops in LoCal told me that the bad guys waited up to 2 months. The insurance companies were slow and the replacement goods weren't back in the victims' homes until then. Sad, huh?

And only demand exactly the same treatment from them.

Reality is, the cops don't really give a rats ass about the theft. They file a report and generally don't ever get around to doing anything about the information (depending on your locality).

I caught a guy in the driveway last year stealing stuff, tried to block his car in but couldn't, and reported the license, description, etc. When I tried to follow up, the response was essentially that it was in the round file for lack of priority.

What cheeses me is that these guys can be caught over and over and still walk away. Give up on "catching" any bad guys and focus on deterrents instead. Even if your tapes are perfect, you have all the information the cops need, and you know exactly where the crooks are, it is still unlikely that the cops will ever get around to doing anything and if they do, it will only be a slap on the wrist (long rambling sentence there!)

Dogs, Lights, loud alarms, and everything chained down. Even at that if they want your stuff, they will take it. Insurance Insurance Insurance. At least you can minimize the inevitable losses.

Different orginazition. Detectives track down criminals after the crime has happened. Patrol offices work accidents, speed enforcement, patrol, etc. The detectives are probably swamped with more serious crimes.

How about getting the Hell out of the way of honest people defending their lives and the property they earn by selling a significant part of their lives?

Then pass a law relieving a householder or business owner of liability for injuries a "visitor" sustains during the commission of a crime?

Ohio had the latter for a while, but I don't know if it's still in effect.

That was one of the things I liked about living in Texas. Story in the paper about a contractor (home out in the country robbed a couple of times) comes home during the day to find two guys loading their car with his stuff. They jump into car and start to drive away. He pulls lever action Winchester off gun rack in pickup and starts to blast away. Car stops against power pole on edge of yard with both guys dead. Sheriff arrives, finds gun on floor of car, decides it was self defense and doesn't press charges against home owner. This was back around 1986-87 so I don't know if things have changed.

It cheeses the cops as well. When we were "done over" the guy who came (5 days later) to check the scene practically begged me to complain about his station's service! But he talked a lot about how guys were back 99 times, and still getting let out again.

Insurance....hmmm. Yes. Minimise. We had a stereo stolen. When I bought it, it cost $700. Replacement cost $350. The "replacements were not as good in features, but had the same "watts per channel" cd stack etc. So the insurance co gets away for half what I paid to insure.......oh yeah. Plus the $100 excess. Bah!
