"Jaguar supercomputer races past Roadrunner in Top500" [ The Cray XT5 supercomputer known as "Jaguar" has finally clawed its way to the title of fastest computer in the world.



Sitting back at No. 2 on the Top500 list of supercomputers for more than a year, Jaguar overtook IBM's "Roadrunner" according to the twice-yearly list that will be unveiled Tuesday at the SC09 Conference in Portland, Ore.



Jaguar beat out the competition by showing it can process 1.75 petflop/s, or quadrillions of floating point operations per second, according to the Top500 Linpack benchmark. IBM's Roadrunner was pushed back to No. 2 by posting a processing speed of 1.04 petaflop/s, a dip from the 1.105 petaflop/s it reached in a June 2009 test. The slower performance this time around is apparently due to a repartitioning of the system. ]


And while Obama is smoozing his communist buddies in China, they are catching up with us. Hell of a job BO.

China has better education & rapidly improving infrastructure along with a much larger populatin. They make about 10X the steel that the US does too. And, while their rate of economic growth recently shrank a little, it avoided depression & recession.

What did you expect?

Wingers ran the US into the ground.

It's only 1/3 the speed of the Jaguar-- but it's probably not a coincidence that it has 1/3 the number of chips. IOW, the technology is roughly equivalent, just they built a smaller version...

Evolutionary dead end. Stop wasting money on supercomputers. Massively parallel processors are the future.

These *are* massively parallel. The Jaguar uses something like 50,000 individual AMD Opteron processors.

Yeah, I noticed that too. I'll guess with that many chips it's built as modules. If so, I'll bet it's built so they can add on and expand later.

Smoozing??? He's probably selling them Crays so they can process those nuclear secrets they "stole."

The problem with parallel computing is in the compiler. Breaking up and issuing tasks so portions come together at the right time for the next operation was/is a major difficulty although I've read that great strides have been made.

In particular I've been following Chuck Moore's multi-processor chip evolution over the years with some inside sources. The current incarnation is 40 600Mhz processors (that's 24 Ghz!) each with memory on a single chip that could retail for a couple bucks in production. Their problem is data bottlenecking and compiler construction.

The first ones were massively parallel (for the time).

For many problems all possible decision paths are computed in parallel and then resolved to the one correct one when the decision is made. You already have the results stored.

AFAIK Most Intel & AMD processors use quite a bit of parallel architecture.

Why would they want to buy machines slower than what they build?? And they do just fine with Nukes on their own.
