Leftover BP part

I just hate it when there are parts left over from re-assembling something! I have my new BP back together except for putting the motor back on. I did the disassembly and rebuild myself and I have no idea where this part came from but it was in the box. It is a tapered pin about 3/4" long with a #6 or #8 internal thread on the big end. I can't see it in any diagrams. I replaced the top belt housing, lead screws, ram pinion, "X" nut, speed control crank shaft and table bearing brackets. I didn't have to disassemble any deeper so it shouldn't be an internal part. Any ideas? I'm embarrassed!



I have been guilty of throwing a few extra parts into somebody else's box when they weren't looking but nobody else would be that cruel.

I believe that pin and another one like it is used to align the top and bottom castings below the motor. You did remove the top belt housing and that should be where the pin goes. There would possibly be alignment pins like that on the lead screw nut housings and table bearing brackets. Look through the parts list for tapered pins.

When I was racing sailboats, it was the occasional prank as the other craft passed you..you pitched a couple bits of pins, cotter keys and whatnot up into his sail..and it would slither down and go Clunk! into the boat....tended to make a sailor start thinking about things other than the race.

Did you do any work on the quill spring area? On my excello, and some of the bridgeports I have worked on, the cover of the quill spring has an alignment pin with a tapped hole in the end. I don't think it was tapered, though. It slid freely in and out of the cover so it would be easy to lose. Don't know if this is it, but just my thoughts. ww88
