Measuring radii on parts when preparing drawings

Hello, if somebody gives you a curvy part that needs to be precisely drawn up in 3rd or 1st projection for manufacturing what method do you use to accurately measure the radii of the part's curves and their origin points?



and in doing the above show where each curve starts and stops?

You don't mention overall size of parts, but if small enough an optical comparator comes to mind.

Then a bit more complicated perhaps would be an inspection machine where you could pick off points in all three co-ordinates and correlate back to the original geometry?

Of course you want to keep in mind: Form, fit, and function....ie is something simply an edge break or does it perform some function, or is it necessary for fit?

A nice optical comparator would do it for a couple grand (used) if he couldn't find a $12.95 set of radius gauges. ;)

(Or $108 for Starrett gauges @ MSC, $13 for Chiwanese @ HF.)

Addendum: I was looking on Harbor Fright for those gauges (nogo) and found the 3rd Lautard book for sale there at $16.99 each! His first is $20.99 and they're out of the 2nd.

Greetings Steve, If they are truly radii, i.e., part of a circle, then the following formula will work. You will need to be able to measure a chord length accurately and the rise accurately. From Machinery's Handbook: (r = c squared + 4 x h squared)/8 x h. Where r = radius, c = chord length, and h = the rise or distance from the chord to the arc.
