mounting milling machine

I am about to move my elliot Sturdimill 1250(universal) to a new location - with 3 phase this time so I can actually use it!!! The mill weighs about 3 tons and I was wondering how to mount it.



The manual says to bolt it down using rag bolts and then cement it in. Is this still a good idea with modern practice?



One problem I have is the floor is coated in a lovely green substance that I don't want to ruin too much. Would it be possible to put the mill on a very thick piece of marine ply or rubber to absorb vibration before bolting down? Also is it possible to drill the holes etc once the mill is in place and epoxy the bolts?

I'd at least try just setting it on rubber for a test. If you don't want to buy the proper pads to do this, strips of side wall from old tires works pretty good, and lifts it about 1/4". I think it is more important to get the machine level and the weight even on all "corners" than to have it bolted down.

Grainger's sells the kit for setting studs in epoxy. You let the epoxy cure and then you can tighten the nuts. If properly done in a clean hole, the stud will not come out.

That's what the guys who hung the ceiling pannels in the 'Big Dig' said too..:-)

I know. But the whole story is a little more complicated. Apparently the epoxy system was for use with a lighter, but more expensive ceiling system. They took the cheaper, heavier ceiling panels but not the corresponding fastening system, which IIRC relied on steel cast into the overhead concrete. In addition, the fasteners were supposed to be 100% tested before the ceiling was installed. This is just some preliminary stuff I heard on NPR, I'm sure the results of the investigation will be on "Modern Marvels" engineering disasters soon! I used this system in a transformer vault once to anchor a come-along. We had to pull over 300 feet of old lead primary cable out of a conduit. We put some incredible tension on that bolt. If installed properly, under extreme tension the bolt will fail or a huge section of concrete will come out, the bond to the concrete will not fail. That said, I wouldn't spec it for a ceiling.
