Oil cup stuffing?

Howdy! I know there are no silly questions, but this may be approaching the silly threshold. I'm putting an old 6x48 belt sander back into commission and am about to put the oil cups on. The belt drum axles run in bronze bearings and the trunnions? have a substantial void between the cast iron and the bronze bearing.

On electric motors I've taken apart there is some kind of non-woven "munge" that absorbs great amounts of oil and acts as a wick to slowly release the oil to the bearings.

So the question is: "Do I fill these voids with something like cotton or shredded felt to act as an oil buffer?" My concern is that the cast iron trunnions will "sweat" oil if there is no buffer.

Any thoughts?

I used short lengths of flat white shoelace rolled to the diameter of the oil cups on my Atlas lathe.

My South Bend lathe uses felt. McMaster-Carr sells it quite reasonable, though I'm not sure what grade would be appropriate.

Felt oil burner filters cut up to the appropriate size works pretty good and is cheap.

Hi Dave Rather then pay supplier prices for felt , I have had good luck just buying a pair of felt insoles for boots and cutting it to fit . Works well for wipers as well and one set is probably enough to last the average person a lifetime . Ken Cutt

Ken,

Excellent idea. One of the things I truly enjoy about folks on this newsgroup is the "thinking outside the box".......

Wouldn't this case be "Thinking inside the cup"?

(Take it away, gents!)
