OT Do Not Call Registry e-mail Spam Warning

No metalworking in this one, sorry. My intention is to possibly save some group member/s grief by reporting my mistake.

A few of weeks ago, I started getting automated phone solicitations from some carpet cleaning outfit in violation of the 'do not call list'. They were calling multiple times a week and cheesing me off.

On Monday of this week when they called, I pressed the proper key to speak with a live operator and managed to get the company name.

I then went went to the 'National Do Not Call Registry' web site...

... and filed an online complaint. I made a HUGE mistake by entering my real e-mail address on the 'Do not call' web site complaint form.

Before all of this my average e-mail spam load was extremely light, maybe 3 pieces a day, somedays even zero. Been like that for years on end.

By Tuesday it was up to 10 or 12, and today was probably 45+ and counting.

Moral of the story is don't EVER give or trust those silly little Government bastards any information they don't absolutely need. Even then, keep a fresh tub of Vaseline handy and check often to be sure it's sand free.

The sad thing is I have a 'beater' webmail account setup just for such abuse, but didn't use it.

Wow, one of the most sagacious-est pieces of advice I've heard in a long time. A true wisdomette! I'm stealing it!

Lissen, I'm looking for good people to serve on my election campaign Board of Directors for the IPPVM--Independent Party of the Proctologically Violated (M)asses. Would you like to be a member? You've already proven yer worthiness. :)

But what you report is ironic indeed. Mebbe you should follow up on this, as sumpn seems very wrong in Mayberry.

Now the Q is, how do you salvage this email account, or do you just abandon it? That in itself can be semi-traumatic, I would imagine, if you depend on it for business, etc.

McGuillicudey's Law has it that:

"It is impossible to measure any system without loading it"

Isn't that a corollary the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle? Good corollary, tho. :)

creates a javascript the prevents bots from harvesting your email address. Create a graphic with the address for people who keep javascript turned off.

has an example I use. You can look at the page source, but it doesn't hold the address. It is stored on the server, in pieces. It is assembled by the web page when the script is called. it also fills out the subject line, so I know which page the email was sent from.
