OVERSPEED SOLVED: Onan DJE generator WORKS!!!

The overspeeding problem has been solved by doing two things:1) Cleaning the solenoid that must be engaged for the engine to run(the one that pushes the same lever as the governor linkage), andoiling its internals with 5W30.2) Actually correcting the absolutely wrong governor adjustment nutthat some military genius decided to "tighten" (he thought probablythat it was simply holding the fan cover in place).So, now I have a perfectly working generator, as far as I can tell,producing between 59 and 61 Hz, about 118 volts depending on load.Voltage is kind of inconsistent, between 113 and 120, I have notfigured the pattern yet. May have something to do with having akillawatt on one leg and load on another. or whatever, I was tooexcited.I load tested it with 3 kw load, two 1.5 kw loads on two oppositelegs, and it did not even change sound or frequency by much. It is a6kw genset, but I have no electricals in place to test it with 6kw.So, I have several general directions for now:1. Accessorize it. Build and add a nice electrical panel to it, withraintight cover, 110v and 220v convenience outlets, and terminal lugsfor connecting the genset to the house itself.2. Soundproof it.3. Put it on an appropriate foundation, and I would prefer it to be onwheels somehow, so that it could be moved. In its permanent location,I would jack it and put on solid foundation of sorts, with the wheelssuspended. If I need to move it, I would jack it again. I also needengine mounts.I am completely elated and think that I have a very nice generator,finally.I want to thank everyone. Thank you!!!Pix:

Good point. I do plan on having my generator in a portable condition. To that end, I bought 4 13" pneumatic tires from Harbor Freight for $6.99 each, and will mount generator on this. I will also sandwich two used car tires between the wheelbase and generator platform for flexibility and dampening of vibration (see my another thread).

If the connectors are that inexpensive, I see no reason not to buy them! I did plan however, on using proper terminal lugs bolted together, which, I think, is a setup that is easy to take apart.

Absolutely, plus, working in the garage is much more pleasant, especially in bad weather. That's why I will have this thing on wheels.

Cool, thanks for the tip. I also own some relatively lousy tractor muffler.

I agree with that. I will do a nice muffler job once everything else is done.

One for oil, and TWO filters for fuel, in series. There is also a sediment bowl on the generator fuel line. This is a generator that is meant to survive the worst conditions.

I will indeed drain oil very soon, because I will need to attach an oil drain spout(?) to the oil drain. I may also open up the engine a little bit by removing the cooling system housing, and carefully clean and oil the moving parts and cooling fins.

Yes, it is a lovable unit. It also sucks in, and filters, a lot more fuel than it uses. It returns the excess fuel back to the tank via return line. What this means is that it keeps fuel in a good condition.
