PICTURES -- Moving to my new shop

That's a tough one to wrap one's head around ig.

Is that the same place you where looking at before?

Now, you can really get some noisy toys with a string to the throttle and let the kid have it, have fun.

Handy pond across the street. No more worries about disposing of toxic chemicals.

Just kidding.

Not renting. I bought that place.

I will sell all the machines, perhaps I will keep one Cincinnati number 2 T&C grinder.

I think the shop moved to a new location. If you put universal grinding, chicago, il into google maps (first url below) you'll see an address, 1433 W. Fulllerton Ave Ste i Addison, IL 60101, along with a picture of Iggy's shop at 5250 Mc Dermott, Berkeley, IL.

Do I need to give you the full Open Delta "High Leg" lecture?

(Short version: Never connect 120V circuits to the Orange leg that's ~190V to ground. Bad things will happen.)

I only see the one service, so it isn't 240V Wye, you can't get 120V out of that without transformers. And 120/208V Wye usually isn't something they want for Industrial.

It could either be open or full or closed delta depending on how many transformers are hanging on the pole. 2 for open delta and three for full delta which gives you better voltage control under load and more load capacity. Open delta won't give you the same power for starting large motors but the utility saves a transformer or even a third line to your shop.

Hey Iggy,

I never got an "answer" to this. I didn't see a shaper in the pix, although I did see a rotary grinder that looked like a shaper at first. I suspect the grinder is both more vsluable, and definely nore expensive and useful than a shaper, although I just bought one!!!

Wuzzup???

Looking at the site in Google Earth there appears to be three pots on the pole nearest, and just North of, the NorthWest corner of the building. Is that the service pole Ig?

How Big?

Three pots is a full Delta feed. One should be larger than the other two. The larger one has the grounded center tapped neutral for 120/240 single phase on each end of the secondary output. As Bruce said the other leg coming from the two smaller pots is your high, wild, red, orange leg depending on where you are. In any event measure the voltage before inserting a breaker into a panel box, especially if every third one is not used. The new code requires the high leg to be marked orange, the older code at least in New Jersey it was marked red and thus called the red leg. In any event measure it.

I wondered why no one questioned getting three phase out of only two hot primary wires and two pole transformers?

Someone here has a railroad (probably actually a ships) horn mounted in their vehicle. I hear it about once a month at various distances. Karl
