I recommend building a simple plywood crate and then shipping it via Forward Air. They are waay the cheapest way to go. Their price is about $35/100 pounds. There are some limitations:
the item must be delivered to a Forward Air terminal shipping must be paid for with money order (no plastic, no cash) the item must be picked up from a Forward Air terminal
That being said, there are a number of their terminals, and you can buy a money order for 60 cents at any 7-11 or Safeway store. You build the crate, crate up the item, haul it to their warehouse, they weigh it and do the paperwork and tell you the exact amount, then you drive 2-3 miles to the nearest money order vendor (they will know where, don't worry) and get a MO, then you go back and pay. Piece of cake.
I have shipped a Bridgeport J-head across the country, and I have shipped a steam cleaner across the country using these guys.
