because some people install every cute thing that comes past them. cute screen savers, cute Bonzibuddy that greets you, cute this that and the next thing. they also install everything their friends send them to 'view', and try out software from the web that clearly states it is 'advertising supported', and then wonder why their computer is full of trash.

you, on the other hand, have not done those things, and therefore your computer will be relatively clean.

Actually, it's interesting. The net has produced more desire for "free" stuff than anything else I can think of. Free software, free information, free photos (of various kinds), free plans etc.

_Somebody_ has to support all this freedom, and the provision of all the info that is there. This very newsgroup is something that's there for all of us, and it or its systems has to be set up, maintained and coordinated by somebody, even if it's "automatic".

I don't like data miners. There are serious implications as far as what they can do. They are one step down from a virus, really. The attitude of continually trying to get around people's defences also annoys me.

But I do wonder about popup killers. There's a popup. So what? The operator of a web site is giving you something, usually for nothing, be it info or entertainment. Again. Something has to support that effort.

If people object to popups, then ignore them as you do TV ads. Or get out there and provide your own useful web site, without popups, to repay somebody else's efforts.

I actually take a quick look at stationary ads that show up on my screen and even click on some of them. Now that more of them are related to the topic of the web page I'm on, they are sometimes actually useful. I have even bought products that were advertised that way.

Pop ups got to be overdone so I don't allow them on my system. The choice is simple, if an advertiser wants me (and many others) to see their ads, don't use pop-ups.

I don't ignore TV ads either, I remove them. I use an automatic 'skip ads' feature of my DVR to bypass them. I use popup blockers in my web surfing. I

I can't remember the last time I watched any network TV; I would MUCH rather subscribe to a no-ad cable channel where interesting content is available. Imagine a news channel beholden ONLY to its subscribers!

The problem is at some sites, there are not one or 2 popups - they come so thick and fast that you cannot close them without more opening. The only what your is to close down the computer. I have been to some sites where the site is unusable thanks to the popup.

OK. I have never struck that. I can only hope that will self regulate, as the advertisers realise that a greedy site will simply not get visited or listened to after a while.

you don't have to close down the computer. if u have windowsXP+internet explorer, press ctrl/alt/delete, choose "iexplore.exe" in WindowsTaskManager and press "end process". then start your browser again. other windows than XP can be handled in similar ways.
