At the suggestion of my son (the software engineer), I downloaded SpyBot and installed it. It found PAGES of spyware lurking in my computer! No wonder I've been getting more spam than content in my e-mail. This is a nice freeware program developed in Germany. I'll provide a donation as thanks, but if you're particularly cheap, you don't have to. Nice program.

I recently did something like that too and was horrified to find the hundreds of things that had self-installed and were happily sucking my bandwidth. It was very satisfying to wipe them all out. All fine now.

Yessir! My system was so clogged with this stuff that it was locking up every few minutes, but Spybot cleared it up, even deleted junk that Ad-Aware couldn't. Mike.

I got Ad Ware, it is free. My computer was so bad I could hardly use it. After running Ad Ware it was un un un believable. I run it once a week now. It seems they put the stuff on your computer and every time you sign on it serches for the mother ship and it hits you. Once it is gone thats is the end of it. I very highly recommend it.

I use Ad-Ware myself and the google IE add-on, I never get them anymore. The google bar helps with annoying pop-ups.
yes but dont let the google toolbar use its spyware program. when you install the toolbar, it asks you if you want the toolbar to contact google, don't let it

Ditto. I was hoping for an astounding increase in speed for this old machine, after downloading the spybot application.
It didn't find anything. I think all the spy software rejects installation in a 166 Mhz pentium running windows95.

A lot of them are using Outlook Express as an e-mail program, and probably IE (with the default settings) for a web browser.
A lot of this stuff is designed to take advantage of security weaknesses in both programs.
I see that you use Forte Agent for usenet news (and presumably for e-mail as well), and I wonder what you use for a web browser.
Also -- did you go in and tune the security settings from the defaults which came with the system?
Or -- it could be the kind (and number) of sites which you visit. :-)

Spybot found 4 on mine. All of which came with some software that was loaded or came with windows. In fact two of them where due to IE which I don't use.

I did a search for spybot & came up with a program called nuker. It seems as it was tied to spybot. I downloaded it & it wouldnt run. My suspicions were aroused so i ran McAfee & found that spybot nuker has worm virus.
Hmm. I run netscape, and always run with java and javascript undone. Also that machine at home does not have any mail capability. So that helps.

I, last night downloaded SpyBot and, I think, instaled it but it didn't have any way to place it in a seperate folder. I told it to put it in "F Protect" and it seemed to go ahead and do it. But I havent seen any thing happen since. How do I know if it is, or has, done anything?? ...lew...
I just ran "Spyhunter" and it found over 300 spy items....240 were in registry, 70 in cookies and 12 files......I sure hope this helps!

I use the other german program, Adaware and when I first ran it I found over 200 nasties lurking on my internet PC.
