(Steam) boat gloat

We had a fantastic steamboat cruise, on the grand American Queen, over the Christmas holiday period, Dec. 21 to Dec 28. Good food, good drink, good entertainment and above all, a great chance to see a



4-cyl, steeple -compound steam engine driving a 45-ton paddlewheel. Steam nutz dream! And the wife enjoyed it too. We had some interesting shore cruises; among them a visit to the Vicksburg National Battleground and more steam delights. The partially restored, iron-clad, civil war gun boat and some artifacts from it are on display.

COOL!! I took the family on a little steam paddle wheeler in Louisville, KY. It was only a few hour trip on a hot summer day and it was delightful. It also had a steam recip engine but I don't remember the details. I spent many years in the engine room of Navy ships so I can appreciate the old recips., they really are neat!

Right Dan. And recip engines are durable. For example, the engines of the American Queen are circa

1932. They came from a govt. dredge that was decommissioned in 1984. Those engines were installed in the American Queen when she was built in 1995.
