Surviving the 100 year FALL

At least as of several years ago they were still in production.

I don't know where "here" is near, but here in the Seattle area (generally anywhere's within a day's drive)the place is Hardwicks. I'll put in a plug for my old employers Dean and Bill Hardwick of Hardwick's and Sons (4214 Roosevelt Way NE, Seattle,WA 98105) They carry Alladin lamps (etc) and do mail order. They also carry the oddest assortment of stuff in a variety of "areas" - this is a real old fashioned hardware/ tools / furniture / kitchen stuff and "Other" kind of store. Buys second hand "junk" and sells "cheap stuff". They also do phone orders (206) 632-1203 and even online

Across the street is the UW Bone and Joint clinic. Because of ferry schedules and traffic I would sometimes arrive quite early for an appointment. No problem, just head across the street to Hardwick's. I could spend hours in there. In fact I have. There is all sorts of good stuff. ERS

Any fuel tips? I was using gas station pump kerosene last year, but it was a little odoriferous. I bought a gallon of deodorized K1 kerosene from the hardware store last week, but haven't tried it yet. It costs more, but for infrequent use, I'm willing to pay the price, if it smells less. I'd hate to pay what they want for fancy "lamp oil", if I can avoid it.

BTW, it's spelled "Aladdin". I misspelled it "Alladin" earlier today and I think I misled a few people.

Don't use gasoline lamps/lanterns in an enclosed place (house). The fumes they give off can kill you.

Kerosene is OK. Coleman made some kerosene lanterns (mostly in Canada), but I don't know if they make them anymore. They are a little more complicated to use because the vaporizer has to be preheated (with a built in cup that you put kero in and light first). I would expect you would have to find a used one.

Alladin has a website and I believe they sell direct. Do a Google and you should be able to find all kinds of dealers.

Bad move. The Colemans are notorious carbon monoxide generators- the kero lamps (because they recycle their flue gases) are actually cleaner burning.

A lot. We were at the Adirondack Hardware Store in Old Forge NY (which sells everything) and they had Aladdin mantle lamps from $200 (milk glass) to $300 (stainless steel) and up. My aunt had several that she trashed. *%$#!

I would think the same issue is true of kerosene lamps - the combustion by-products are CO2 - same as with gasoline lamps, yes?

I always thought that the amount of CO2 was small enough to allow the natural air exchange in the house to keep it below noticeable levels.

Maybe it's the CO (from incomplete combustion)- it gets absorbed (or is it adsorbed?) by the red blood cells preferentially to oxygen, so only a tiny bit will get you.

Doh! Of course I meant to say CO in the above post. Don't know what I was thinking.

Good point. Though in repeated tests..my CO detectors show a increase over 12 hours of continuous usage, but never reach levels of concern. I do not use them in small rooms, where the various kero lamps are used as you indicate.

Im a survivalist, long term, and am a smart and informed one. But thanks for the comments, others may need to know this sort of stuff

The methodology of the left has always been:

  1. Lie
  2. Repeat the lie as many times as possible
  3. Have as many people repeat the lie as often as possible
  4. Eventually, the uninformed believe the lie
  5. The lie will then be made into some form oflaw
  6. Then everyone must conform to the lie

Well, there are 123 or so available on Ebay at this point in time...some of which appear to be collector's items as folks are bidding them up high, and, some that seem to be users...at reasonable prices. Regards Dave Mundt
