My check list is a bit shorter but highly effective:

1. Outside air temp less than the drinking temp of my beer..... Check
2. Car full of fuel....Check
3. Car engine running.....Check
4. Car compass indicating south.......Check

Really? The Deitz plant isn't far from here- friend of mine was the last plant manager. Place closed after one ugly labor dispute and all the tooling went to China.

Something about them always struck a chord. I still have the first ones I bought when I was a kid. Five bucks was a lot of money for a ten year old back then. :)

Best story though was that the local gas station had a promotion, you could get a 'hurricane lamp' for a few bucks with a fillup. My dad was non-plussed. "What do you need one of those smelly things for?"

Yep, you guessed it, that was a few days before the blackout in, what, '68 - where Big Allis blew up in NY. Funny part was, we were at a flea market a few months after that, and they had some old barn lanterns, and I was broke. But I asked anyway, if I could buy one - I had picked up the cheapest one for a buck or so, and my dad looked at it, and said, well, you really should buy *this* one, it has the filler cap in place! He paid for it. LOL. And yes it's a deitz, and I still have it.

They're mostly for fun, but sometimes they do come in handy!

I got a call from my wife earlier this evening. Rain had blown out a transformer and the neighborhood was blacked out. Ours was the only house in about a 15 block square area with lights. She was pissed that she couldnt start the genset so she could check her email. Ill check it this weekend. I suspect the remote start switch has gone bad.

And yes..Deitz lamps are the best keros (have 4-5), but Coleman lanterns put out lots more light. Which is why I have 10 of them. I think she had at least 4 running as she was baking cookies (gas stove) and the son and daughter in law were putting together a jigsaw puzzle.

The methodology of the left has always been:

1. Lie
2. Repeat the lie as many times as possible
3. Have as many people repeat the lie as often as possible
4. Eventually, the uninformed believe the lie
5. The lie will then be made into some form oflaw
6. Then everyone must conform to the lie

Have you tried a kerosene lamp that uses a mantle? My Alladin (kero) isn't quite as bright as my Coleman (propane), but it's in the ballpark. Much quieter, too.

I've been looking around here for an alladin, but they're few and far between. I don't like the coleman mantle types because of the issue of having a more volatile fuel in the house - in spite of the extra brightness.

I saw you mention that before and I wondered if that's the one you were talking about.

I had one I used in my camper 35 years ago. It was a brass table model, and it even had a shade. Very nice. I wonder if they're still made, and what they cost today?

Mine is brass with a plain white glass shade, but they make some really fancy ones, too. Any of them look nicer on the dining room table than a Coleman, if that's significant to you.

Hmm. $209 for the model I had, which sounds like the same one that you have now. I think I paid $10 for mine at a closeout, at a Newark marine-supply warehouse.

We picked up half a dozen Alladins at rural auctions before they became big collector items. I really like them - lots of light and quiet.
