V-Block Question

I think it's an artifact of the way they're made. Most V-blocks have a 90 degree included angle. If there's a little slot in between the faces it allows the faces to be ground on a surface grinder, the entire width.

it also allows a sharp corner to fit into the block flat. if you grind a corner there will always be some kind of radius in the corner so its easier to either slot the bottom or mill a radius to keep from inducing a stress fracture area.

Exactly that, and I suspect a bit of function that followed form if one needs to place a "square" part into the vee. A bit of clearance is needed for the potentially sharp 90 degree corner or burr on your workpiece.

I'm not a machinist, so I was waiting to see whether anyone else would mention this: A relief at the bottom of the Vee gives dirt and particles a place to fall. It's easier to clean if your rag doesn't have to fit perfectly against at sharp corner.

I'd say those little slots can be a pain to clean, especially compared to a corner. Also, one should not leave reference surfaces/edges dirty at all. Vice jaws, chuck jaws, angle plates, etc. need to be cleaned whenever a part is removed (reclamped).
