O>T> Talk shows

I'm sure that most of you have heard that the liberal wing of the democratic party is planning a radio broadcast to compete with the conservative ones now airing. Some one called the Gordon Liddy show and suggested that they might call it "The Algorezeera Network"

Ah, Gunner, it's such fun to talk to you, because it's so easy to make you laugh.

BTW, speaking of Liddy, did you ever read his book _Will_? If so, maybe you can explain to me why decent people would listen to him on the radio. Read the part about how he selected the Browning hunting knife he intended to use to murder a security guard.

I don't care about his politics nor his opinions. I only care about what he did, and what he attempted to do.

FWIW, I would have left him in prison for the full 20. Carter was a cream puff and a fool for letting him out.

BTW, among the acolytes you quoted (I would love to know what that "leading newspaper" is...two guesses, the Washington Times or The Union Leader ), the guy who said he followed Neitzsche's principles is all wet. As Liddy said himself, it was Machiavelli, and, as he also said, he saw Nixon as Machiavelli's Prince.

If you've ever read _The Prince_, you know what that's about. Machiavelli was the apologist for lying, double-dealing, and killing for the sake of the Prince and the State. Once you know that's what Liddy admired as a child and as a man, the meaning of his behavior as he describes it in _Will_ becomes clear: Liddy doesn't believe in democracy. He believes in the divine right, and the divine duty, of princes. More importantly, he believes that any behavior by the Prince and his supporters is legitimate as long as it perpetuates the power of the state. That's what it means to be a Machiavellian.

As Nixon's staff describe him, Liddy was, and maybe still is, a fruitcake. He does have a strong will -- burning your palms with a flame as a child, on purpose, does tend to focus one's mind. But he's used it in the service of an authoritarian idea that, as I said, sees nothing wrong with murder if it is done in the service of divine authority.

He seems like one weird dude for libertarians to admire.

FDR/Clinton(both of them) seem like wierd people for anyone to admire.

Why do you say that about FDR?

Liddy was working to overthrow our government. That qualifies in my book.

Gunner; Your diatribe in defense of the 'right wing' does not jive with your obvious intelligence. Blind allegience to an obviously flawed stance (political) diminishes your charactor. Granted I come from what most Americans consider a (just short of outright communism) Canadian socialist conviction but your stated political beliefs do not coinside with what you confess to be your core beliefs (a belief in self determination).. To simplify - the left believes that the disadvantaged (economically, educationally, situonally, physically, mentally or any other condition that puts them at a disvantage vis a vis the general population, deserve support from that population/community. The right - your right as you have led us to believe - says that they have to sink or swim. In any context by any thinking man this cannot be right or just. Am I totally wrong in thinking that a society as rich as the one we enjoy can deny these people some sort of equal and just opportunity? I say this in the context of my political leanings. What do you say? Not a challenge nor a flame. I am only trying to seek answers. BTW at the present I am living in Honduras - a place that is the poster child of right wing politics - a great improvement over the military dictatorship the present 'democratic' governnent supplanted.

FDR gutted, hammered, burned, ravaged and trampled on not only the Constitution, but the principles behind it. Yet he is considered a great man by some.

Thats like saying Charlie Manson is a great man. Though Charlie never did kill anyone personally, he shared the honors with FDR as having directed others to kill for him.

More that he was trying to govern during a time of extreme crisis. The country was desperate and they probably would have done anything to get the economy moving and folks back to work. The fact that some of his programs and court-packing were eventually slapped down was again a testament to the durability of our constitution. Much the same way that the US survived the Nixon/Liddy years, and the Reagan/Ollie North years.

It has been said that the depression was the last great mythic time for the US. Large numbers of displaced citizens roaming the land, extreme desperation and financial hardship forcing big changes to nearly everyones' lives.

I hope we never have that experience again.

Duh..of course he was. And your point invalidated mine how?

Someone said that the "Constitution was not a suicide pact."

Just keep that, and what you said above, in mind when you start spouting about Ashcroft etc etc.

Me too. But I keep that tucked in the back of my mind. Im a survivalist, remember? Not all disasters involve Big Assed Meteors © or nukes.

The next "economic/crisis" will be energy related.

Like those long gas lines of the 70s.

Rationing of fuel according to your license plate, odd/even. Abandoned cars along the interstate. No gasoline on the weekends.

Stock market plunge...

People attempting to store gasoline in 30 gallon containers in their apartments...

my 2 cents

Easy there big guy. I wasn't criticizing, just point out why it was that he got as much rope as he did. I am four-square in the camp of "let's not mess with the constitution because it might not recover" camp.

Lincoln did it, FDR did it, Reagan did it.

And every time, it's just plain wrong. So far we've managed to recover from the hijack attempts.

I do so enjoy it when you and Gunner go head to head! Anyway, one hell of a real man died today. Warren Spahn, El Supremo Big League pitcher. I remember when I was a kid (pre-TV) and I used to listen to the Braves (Milwaukee) games on the radio before I went to bed. Great stuff! TV was a kind of a let down after listening to a good announcer describing a baseball game on the radio. Spahn threw strikeouts and I went to sleep imagining that I could do it too.

G. Gordon Liddy paid his dues, but to me, the real heroes were Spahn, Eddie Mathews, Lou Burdette, Hank Aaron, Del Crandall, Bob Buhl and the all the others on the mid-50's roster of the Milwaukee Braves.

AHA! Caught 'ya. You didn't really read Liddy's book, did you.

Few are as efficient as Gordo, though, with a Browning folding hunter. Do you remember his discussion about it? Of course not. You didn't really read it, did you.

Oh? Are you implying he had them killed?

I thought you wanted cites comparing the two, directing others to kill for him. Make up your mind.
