What is the croos hole of a boring head for?

What is the through hole in a boring head used for? The hole that is perpendicular to the spindle? Thanks, Steve



Its for boring holes that are larger than the boring head diameter--usually with a left handed boring tool in it, while running the spindle in a clockwise direction.
