Anybody know of a source of 32mm (or so) graphite rod at non-sillly prices. Only want a foot or two.

Look for EDM Electrodes. Graphite is used in 'Sinker' Electro Discharge Machines as it is cheaper than copper.
POCO is one brand but there are several
