Machining Video - Demo

Saw this mentioned on one of the US engine forums:

It is a demonstration video of a Matsuura 5-axis CNC machining a V8 engine block out of a solid block of ali.

Turn the sound off....

Why the rocking motion when doing the 'bores'?

Guessing it means only the cutting point of the tool is touching and not

The shaft of the mill/spindle is bigger than the mill.

What ?

It apparently takes 116 hours to do the whole cycle......

I don't know if that block is an actual car engine V8 or a demo item to show off the machine/programmer(s).

Nothing about it on the Matsuura website.

I posted the gent and asked him about the rocking motion. Hope I get an answer.

After a thought about it a bit, in addition to because it can, it likely put a nice cross hatch in walls since they were interpolating an ellipse.

Thanks for the link. Unlike youtube where I first saw it, this link had a link to download the wmv. I can't wait to show this to my co-worker.

That was his answer (given on practical machinist): "We did the bores like that to show off the movemtns of the machine. It is very eye catching. "

Again, if the milling tool's diameter is smaller than its shaft (very likely with a long shaft), there is no other way to reach the bore's wall without colliding.

Hm, requires you to download "Microsoft Genuine (dis)Advantage" spyware to allow you to see it. Won't go there on principle, even though I know my Windows XP is genuine.

Watched the youtube version instead. Fantastic, can I have one for Christmas?
