Bit of a peculiar response. Even if he thought you were trying it on (fairly or otherwise), you might still be willing to compete for it with everyone else. Be funny if there's only one bidder whose max is now a fiver,rather than a pound more than you might have bit. He's clearly not someone you want to deal with.

Mind you even proper shops have this attitude. Tried to buy a van once

- brand new Astra, proper money etc. "How much is the van?" I asked the salesman. He wouldn't tell me, but did inform me "they were like gold-dust". Finally grudgingly asked "how much can you afford a month", which wasn't exactly the point. I was young and a bit intimidated then, so I merely left, rather than being sarcastic. Bought a Maestro van instead, which was great before anyone laughs. "How much is the van?" reply (after usual charade with calculator and discount schpeil) "=A36000" - "OK, I'll take it" How hard is that?

If you go into Sainsbury's and say "how much are potatos?" they just tell you.

Oh yeah, some of his previous auctions did the same, he seems to make lots of mistakes with his listings

Bidding was standing at half my max when it ended. I'll hazard a guess that he's sold it for more than I was willing to pay, but he's still a prat.

car dealers are not proper shops. they get kickback and other things from the money-lenders even if they won't admit it. Hence they want to a) inflate the price, and b) get you to pay by HP.
