Cut a piece and put in a four jaw chuck, find the centre of it and using a parting off tool pointing towards the chuck come from the centre until you reach the ID and drive the cutter into the material, back off and then go to your OD and do the same. Now you should have a ring.

I doubt it would chuck ok, 4mm x 65mm will be quite flexible. Id suggest sticking it to a faceplate. I know PTFE is slippery, but low speed, and light cuts should be ok. double sided carpet tape might work, or a melted wax blob around it? same technique to make the ring though.

Instead of using adhesive tape etc, fasten a disc of plywood (1/2") thick to the face plate and then screw the PTFE to the plywood inside the 55 mm cut line and outside the 65mm cutline. The washer should just drop out when cut.

Yes that sounds better. Ive used adhesive tape for blank aluminium disks for the end of a stirling engine, however aluminium is reasonably easy to stick

I'm hoping to make some rings out of stainless steel, about 1mm thick (ring about 100mm OD, 70mm ID). What tool should I use for cutting these? Parting off tool again or should I use something else?

Also, don't have a faceplate - was thinking of drilling a hole in the plate, another in a piece of wood and bolting them together - then holding this in my 3-jaw chuck... or is this a really bad idea?
