Tracton Engine

Dec 12, 2004 2 Replies

I'm looking at the possibility of building a 2" scale traction engine without castings. I thought the Durham & North Yorkshire would be a good engine to try. I intend to completely model the engine in 3D CAD first -this will help me to understand how it all goes together, and make it easier for me to re-design any parts that I need to change as I'm not using castings. I already have a couple of questions;

I have the full set of ME magazines covering the building of this engine, will I find enough information in the drawings included within these articles to complete this project -or am I destined to come to a grinding halt at some time without the full set of drawings?

I'm drawing the boiler at the moment. The radius sizes on the flanged plates are not given, but as the plate is 1/8 I would have expected the internal rad to be at least 1t (in this case 1/8) which would make the external radius 1/4. They are shown as looking more like 1/8 externally and internally. What size are the radii likely to be on 1/8 thick flanged plates? (I suspect a little "draughtsmans liscence" on the drawings)

Thanks

Kevin

I would say that for the smokebox tube plate and firebox plates it does not matter as they are unseen. Assuming a copper boiler and many annealings to enable flanging they can be as tight or as wide as you chose, other than bearing in mind the closeness of tubes to the beginning of the radii and the tighter the radii the more difficult to flange. An outer radius of 1/4" plus seems OK. For the throat plate and backhead for aesthetic reasons only the radii should be the same ..... probably makes fitting the foundation ring that little bit easier...... but again not essential.

Hi Kevin, am not able to respond directly, as my isp keeps rejecting your address???

However this end I use Rhino and CorelDraw for my design work.
